Leonardo DiCaprio recently revealed that Brad Pitt once thought his parents were extras on the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, adding a glimpse into their off-screen rapport during filming.
Anecdotes from the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood have resurfaced, and the one, involving Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio’s parents, is capturing attention.
In a recent interview with Time Magazine, Leonardo DiCaprio shared a light-hearted memory from the making of Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film, revealing that Pitt initially mistook DiCaprio’s mother and father for extras. According to the Titanic star, when Pitt first saw his parents, Peggy Ann Farrar and George DiCaprio, on set, he assumed they were background actors, not real parents of a co-star. “I know they look like their extras in this movie, but that’s really them. My stepmother is a Sikh. My father is from this hippie counterculture, grew up in San Fran in Los Angeles, hung out with a lot of the underground art movement in Los Angeles in the ’70s,” DiCaprio recounted.
DiCaprio explained that when Pitt found out who they really were, he was pleasantly surprised. “And I remember that moment we were turning a corner at a Muso & Franks on the Hollywood Boulevard. And I said to Brad, That’s my dad, and that’s my stepmom there. And he goes, Yeah, right. I go, No, that’s them. He’s like, Yeah, right. I’m like, I know they look like their extras in this movie, but that’s really them. That’s how they dress every day. It was an amazing moment. I’ll never forget that moment,” he added.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by Quentin Tarantino, reunited Pitt and DiCaprio as stuntman Cliff Booth and actor Rick Dalton, respectively, in a stylised ode to 1960s Los Angeles. The film also featured real-life figures from that era, including DiCaprio’s parents in cameo appearances, blurring the lines between historical detail and cinematic fantasy.
