One of the most disturbing accounts comes from Eleanor Berry, who spent time with the Maxwell family as a child and was a close friend of Ghislaine. In her book, My Unique Relationship with Robert Maxwell: The Truth at Last, Berry recalls a conversation with a nine-year-old Ghislaine, who allegedly said, “Daddy is really nice because he lets me choose the [instruments] he beats me with.” If accurate, this account suggests a young child normalising punishment.
Maxwell’s defence team also cited other incidents to illustrate the reportedly hostile environment at home. In one account submitted to court, they claimed that when thirteen-year-old Ghislaine tacked a pony poster onto a freshly painted bedroom wall, her father reacted violently, striking her hand with a hammer and leaving bruises for weeks.
Other reports describe a pattern of harsh treatment, including long absences, severe interrogations at the dinner table, and public rebukes for minor mistakes, behaviours that demanded perfection at all times.
British journalist John Sweeney has described Robert Maxwell as “a monster, cruel and mad.” He has said that Ghislaine was psychologically shaped and damaged by this upbringing, which he believes prevented her from developing a stable sense of self or moral grounding. While Sweeney maintains that she is guilty and deserving of her sentence, he has expressed a degree of pity for her.
Ghislaine Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in the United States for her role in Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.
