Saketh Sreenivasaiah, a 22-year-old Indian postgraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, has been reported missing in the United States, prompting search operations by local authorities and concern from Indian officials.
According to PTI and local media, Sreenivasaiah was last seen on February 9 near Lake Anza in the Berkeley Hills. His backpack, containing his passport and laptop, was later found on a doorstep in the Park Hills neighbourhood near Tilden Regional Park, The Berkeley Scanner reported.
Search operations underway
The Berkeley Police Department said search efforts are ongoing in the East Bay area in coordination with the East Bay Regional Park District. “We are still asking for the community’s help in locating him,” the department said, according to IANS.
Sreenivasaiah is described as approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing around 73 kilograms, with short black hair and brown eyes. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact local law enforcement.
Indian consulate expresses concern
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco expressed concern over Sreenivasaiah’s disappearance and said it is in touch with both his family and local authorities. In a post on X, the consulate said:
“Consulate General of India in San Francisco is deeply concerned about the disappearance of Saketh Sreenivasaiah, an Indian post-graduate student of University of California, Berkeley, hailing from Karnataka. The Consulate is in touch with the family and also is in contact with the concerned local authorities to locate the student.”
Family and friends seek help
Sreenivasaiah’s roommate, Baneet Singh, posted on LinkedIn seeking assistance in locating him:
“Hey all, my roommate, Saketh Sreenivasaiah, has been missing since Monday the 9th, last seen near Lake Anza in the Berkeley Hills. If anyone knows people in the area who may have seen him, please reach out. I am working with the police to find him. It’s a difficult time for us, and any information would help.”
IIT-Madras alumnus
Sreenivasaiah, from Karnataka, graduated with a BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT-Madras in 2025 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UC Berkeley.
Authorities have also noted that Sreenivasaiah was reportedly upset about a personal relationship prior to his disappearance. Search operations continue as both local police and the Indian consulate work to locate him.
