“I watched him yesterday, with those beautiful sunglasses. What the hell happened?” Trump said, speaking to global elites at the annual World Economic Forum in the Swiss mountain resort
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday mocked French President Emmanuel Macron for wearing aviator sunglasses during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos a day earlier.
“I watched him yesterday, with those beautiful sunglasses. What the hell happened?” Reuters quoted Trump as saying while addressing global leaders and business executives at the annual gathering in the Swiss mountain resort.
Macron’s office later explained that the dark, reflective sunglasses, worn indoors, were intended to protect his eyes following a burst blood vessel.
Macron’s appearance sparked a wave of online memes, with some social media users praising his “Top Gun” look as he criticised Trump over Greenland, while others ridiculed it.
In his speech on Tuesday, Macron described Washington’s threat to impose new tariffs — including on French wine and champagne — as “fundamentally unacceptable,” accusing the United States of trying to pressure Europe into allowing it to buy Greenland.
He said France would stand up to “bullies.”
Trump on Wednesday went on to sharply criticise Europe and its leaders. While ruling out the use of force in his push to control Greenland, he made clear that he wanted the United States to own the Arctic island.
Nato leaders have warned that Trump’s Greenland strategy could destabilise the alliance, even as the governments of Denmark and Greenland have offered expanded options for a greater US presence on the strategically important island, home to about 57,000 people.
