The release of a massive cache of documents by the United States Department of Justice on January 30, has put under the lens all the networks connected to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
Among the prominent names appearing in the material is
Deepak Chopra, the India-born American author, entrepreneur and public figure associated with alternative medicine, wellness and spirituality.
Following the public release, Chopra addressed his appearance in the records and moved to separate himself from Epstein’s criminal history and actions.
On February 4, Chopra posted on X, “I want to be clear: I was never involved in, nor did I participate in, any criminal or exploitative conduct. Any contact I had was limited and unrelated to abusive activity.”
In the same post, he acknowledged that his tone in some of the messages reflected poor judgment, writing, “Some past email exchanges have surfaced that reflect poor judgment in tone. I regret that and understand how they read today, given what was publicly known at the time.”
However, an examination of the records indicates that Chopra’s engagement with Epstein was neither minimal nor sporadic, reported CNN.
The documents reveal sustained communication between the two men over a multi-year period, in addition to in-person interactions at multiple properties owned or used by Epstein in the United States and Europe.
The total disclosure runs into more than three million pages and contains correspondence, financial records, meeting logs and multimedia material linked to Epstein’s interactions over several years.
What do Epstein files reveal about Deepak Chopra?
Years of communication & meetings across countries
Chopra and Epstein exchanged hundreds of emails and text messages between 2016 and 2019. This period includes the months leading up to Epstein’s arrest in July 2019 on federal charges related to sex trafficking and the sexual abuse of underage girls.
The correspondence suggests that their interactions were not limited to occasional professional discussions. Instead, the two men communicated with notable frequency, sometimes arranging meetings and maintaining contact during international travel.
Records show that Chopra visited Epstein at various locations, including Epstein’s townhouse in New York City, his residence in South Florida, and an apartment in Paris.
The exchanges also include logistical planning for meetings, invitations to dine together, and efforts by Epstein to bring Chopra into social or professional gatherings involving other individuals in his circle.
Within their messages, Chopra often expressed familiarity and warmth toward Epstein, at times signing off with “Love” or “XO.”
In one exchange, Chopra wrote, “I’m deeply grateful for our friendship.” Their conversations ranged across subjects such as meditation, health, wellness and spirituality, alongside personal topics and commentary about mutual acquaintances.
Epstein appeared keen to maintain and deepen this connection. He regularly asked Chopra about his travel schedule and whereabouts, and repeatedly extended invitations for dinners or meetings. On several occasions, Epstein also sought to position Chopra as part of broader interactions with business figures and acquaintances.
In one instance in 2016, Epstein asked Chopra whether
the actor Leonardo DiCaprio might be interested in having dinner with filmmaker Woody Allen, who was described in the correspondence as a close friend of Epstein.
The records do not clarify whether such a meeting ever took place.
Epstein also spoke about Chopra to former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, describing him in a message as “hes very amusing and a good guy filled with troves of stories. if you see him, you might enjoy a conversation. he is the guru to hollywood.”
The files also show that Epstein requested his longtime girlfriend, Karyna Shuliak, to arrange for sweatshirts to be made for Chopra featuring the initials “DC” and an American flag, reflecting a degree of familiarity that went beyond casual acquaintance.
“Girls” and sexually suggestive language
A notable portion of the correspondence centres on repeated references to “girls.” In at least two instances in 2017, Chopra invited Epstein to attend trips or events and encouraged him to bring women along.
While inviting Epstein to travel to Israel, Chopra wrote, “If you want use a fake name. Bring your girls.” He later followed up with, “Your girls would love it as would you.”
The same year, while inviting Epstein to join a workshop in Switzerland, Chopra again suggested that he attend “with your girls.”
The documents do not confirm whether Epstein accepted any of these invitations, and they do not establish the ages of the individuals being discussed. Nonetheless, the repeated references form a consistent theme across several exchanges.
The correspondence also contains sexually suggestive remarks and philosophical statements linking spirituality with sexualised language. In one exchange in 2017, Chopra wrote, “Universe is human construct. … Cute girls are aware when they make noises.”
He later added, “God is a construct Cute girls are real.” When Epstein replied, “so when the girl says oh my god. . ?” Chopra responded, “Yes That’s divine tran=cendence.”
In another exchange the same year, Epstein asked Chopra, “find me a cute israeli blonde. . matter over mind.” Chopra replied that he could do so and added, “They are militant aggressive and v sexy.”
The messages also include commentary about women whom Chopra interacted with in different contexts. In a text conversation in which a woman’s name was redacted in the records, Epstein wrote, “I liked watching you zero in on your prey . Made me smile.”
Chopra replied, “I not a predator Just a lover.”
In 2016, Chopra sent Epstein a link to a video he had made with actress Kat Foster and described her as “innocent and smart at the same time.” Epstein responded, “secondary to cute.”
There are also indications that Chopra was aware of sensitivities around the subject of women in certain contexts. In one exchange involving arrangements for a possible meeting between Epstein and Chopra’s son-in-law, Chopra wrote, “(can’t talk about girls ).”
The documents do not clarify whether that meeting ever occurred.
Business ideas & financial connections
Chopra, along with Poonacha Machaiah, co-founder of the wellness app Jiyo, sought Epstein’s input and assistance for the venture. Emails indicate that in July 2017, Chopra and Machaiah planned for Epstein to travel to San Diego so they could “walk [Epstein] through Jiyo Value proposition.”
Following this, Epstein offered to forward the Jiyo pitch to what he described as the “three chairman of the largest insurers.” Machaiah later wrote that he would appreciate introductions “to potential partners in the insurance segment.”
Financial links are also documented. In 2017, the Chopra Foundation received a $50,000 donation from Gratitude America, one of Epstein’s foundations.
According to the records, the funds were intended to support scientific research. The files do not provide further detail on the specific projects linked to this funding.
Also, in what appears to be the beginning of their written exchanges in 2016, Epstein proposed developing a game and discussed the concept of an “aura” app.
In one message, Epstein wrote, “On another note the aura app would be gigantic. Every woman needs a goodness meter.” Chopra replied, “I’m at your service for any adventure sir If we do do an aura app it should be backed up with the emerging theory of biofield science. … The monopoly game could be fun.”
The DOJ’s files also include multiple videos featuring Chopra discussing meditation, spirituality and wellness. None of the videos reviewed by CNN featured Epstein, and they do not appear to have been created specifically for him.
Expressions of support as pressure mounted on Epstein
As Epstein faced scrutiny in early 2019 ahead of his arrest in July that year, the exchanges suggest that Chopra expressed sympathy and support. In February 2019, Chopra texted Epstein to say that he was sending love from India. Epstein responded, “Can you send it in female form J.”
The following month, Epstein referred to the negative coverage he was receiving, mentioning “another round of very bad press.”
In subsequent messages, Epstein described the “toxicity of my press.” Chopra replied, “Sorry I am not concerned about that.” Earlier, Chopra had advised Epstein to “Stay silent Meditate.”
These exchanges took place during a period when Epstein’s legal troubles were becoming more prominent and public attention on his activities was increasing.
Political discussions and references to public figures
Following the 2016 US presidential election, Chopra told Epstein that his family was “devastated” by Donald Trump’s victory. Epstein sought to reassure him, replying, “no no it’s going to be fine.”
In 2017, Chopra authored an article in SF Gate in which he described Trump as “a President who combines irrational whims, vindictiveness, and amorality.” Chopra shared this article with Epstein during their exchanges.
Chopra also mentioned to Epstein that Ivanka Trump had attended one of his meditation sessions in 2016. He explained that he realised her presence because “I noticed a pretty girl in the room,” and that someone subsequently informed him of her identity.
