Amid escalating West Asia tensions and fears of supply disruptions, the government has ordered oil refiners to increase LPG production and prioritise household cooking gas supplies across India
As tensions escalate in West Asia and global energy markets remain volatile, the Indian government has asked oil refiners to ramp up the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ensure that domestic households get priority access to cooking fuel.
The move comes as the conflict in the region raises concerns about supply disruptions, particularly because a large share of India’s LPG imports travel through the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Domestic supply takes priority
In response, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed refiners to maximise LPG production and channel additional supply primarily toward domestic consumers.
“In light of current geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply and constraints on supply of LPG, Ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for higher LPG production and using such extra production for domestic LPG use,” the ministry said.
Officials added that households would be prioritised to ensure cooking gas remains available even if the international crisis worsens.
To prevent hoarding and panic buying, the government has also introduced a 25-day gap between LPG bookings for domestic consumers. This measure is intended to stabilise supplies and ensure fair distribution across the country.

Reviewing supply for industries
At the same time, authorities are reviewing LPG allocations for commercial users such as hotels, restaurants and industries. The goal, officials say, is to ensure that essential domestic needs are met first if supplies tighten further.
India relies heavily on imports to meet its cooking gas demand. According to government data, domestic production accounts for only a portion of the country’s LPG needs, making the supply chain vulnerable to global disruptions.
With the conflict in West Asia intensifying and oil prices fluctuating sharply, policymakers are closely monitoring the situation and preparing contingency measures.
Energy experts say safeguarding LPG supplies has become a top priority because cooking gas is used by hundreds of millions of households across India. Any disruption in supply could have an immediate impact on daily life.

Amid mounting concerns from the hospitality sector, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said it has initiated measures to stabilise LPG availability following supply disruptions linked to global geopolitical tensions.
