1. Updated Volvo EX90 gets 800V electrical architecture
2. Volvo claims 250km of range added in 10min
3. New safety kit includes Emergency Stop Assist and automatic e-Call

Volvo EX90 hardware updates

New 800V electrical system enables charging speeds of up to 350kW

Volvo has not changed any design element of the EX90, although, the hardware updates include the company’s new 800-volt electric system, replacing the 400 V technology, to deliver more power, faster charging speeds, and quicker acceleration. This system will increase the battery’s maximum charging speed from 250 kW to 350 kW, meaning 250 km of range can now be added in just 10 minutes.

Volvo EX90 software updates

New dual Nvidia chips replace the older single unit

The software upgrades includes replacing the Nvidia Xavier chip with two new Nvidia Drive AGX Orin ones, which is claimed to deliver 500 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of computing performance. Anders Bell, chief technology and engineering officer at Volvo Cars says that it enables them “to further enhance the safety and overall performance of the EX90”.

Plus, it has integrated automatic e-Call functionality with Emergency Stop Assist (ESA), designed to automatically bring the car to a controlled stop in case of an accident or if the driver becomes unconscious, and connect the car to an emergency call centre linked to Volvo Support. Currently, in case of emergencies, the Volvo On Call service centre can be alerted manually by pressing the SOS button.

Volvo EX90 India plans

EX90 will follow recently launched EX30 to the market

The company is halfway toward completing its goal to double its electric portfolio in India this year, as it has just launched the all-new entry-level EV, the EX30 SUV. It joins the existing EV lineup that includes the EX40 SUV and its coupe version—the EC40.

The EX90 was unveiled in 2022 as the brand’s flagship seven-seater EV, effectively serving as the electric equivalent of the existing top-end SUV— XC90; the brand’s flagship ICE SUV is on sale in India. When it launches, prices for the EX90 will likely be higher than the XC90, which is currently priced between Rs 96 lakh- Rs 1.05 crore.
