Amid concerns that the ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip could collapse over ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas, Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday arrived in Israel to press Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stick to the deal negotiated by President Donald Trump.
Vance’s visit comes shortly after Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner arrived in Israel on a mission to press Netanyahu and Hamas to remain committed to the deal that Trump has hailed as the crowning moment of his second term so far.
Even as both Israel and Hamas have said that they remain committed to the ceasefire, there are concerns that the exchange of fire in recent days could spiral into renewed fighting that could break the deal.
In multiple rounds of violations of the ceasefire that each side has blamed on the other, Gaza’s Hamas-run authorities have said that Israeli strikes have killed at least 97 Palestinians and Israel has said that two of its soldiers have been killed.
This is a developing story.
