The Trump administration is set to suspend all visa processing for travellers from 75 countries beginning January 21, Fox News reported on Wednesday, citing an internal US State Department memo.
According to the report, the list of affected nations includes Somalia, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Brazil, Nigeria and Thailand, among others.
State Department officials did not immediately comment on the reported memo. Fox News said the directive instructs US embassies to deny visa applications under existing legal provisions while the department conducts a review of its procedures. No duration for the suspension was specified.
The reported move comes as part of a broader immigration clampdown pursued by Republican President Donald Trump since he returned to office last January.
In November, Trump had pledged to “permanently pause” migration from all “Third World countries” following a shooting near the White House by an Afghan national that resulted in the death of a National Guard member.
