An Arab official tsaid that the US and Iran are likely to hold talks in Turkey on February 6, following mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and Oman
A meeting between the United States and
Iran is expected to take place in Turkey on February 6, an Arab official told AFP on Tuesday. The talk comes after Tehran called for nuclear talks to resume and Washington warned of consequences if no agreement was reached.
The development comes as Trump has sent an armada towards Iran amid near-daily threats. He has also deployed additional warplanes to the region in a military build-up that mirrors the mobilisation seen before last month’s American invasion of Venezuela.
The official, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the discussions, said that “a meeting between US negotiators and senior Iranian officials was likely to take place on Friday in Turkey.”
They added that “the potential meeting had been arranged following interventions by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and Oman.”
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will meet in Istanbul in an effort to revive diplomacy over a long-running dispute about Iran’s nuclear programme and dispel fears of a new regional war, while a regional diplomat said representatives from countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt would also participate.
