Ukraine has regained control of 400 square kilometres of territory, including eight settlements, along a section of the southern frontline since the end of January, according to Reuters report, citing Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi on Monday.

The gains, made in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, are rare in a conflict marked by slow and costly Russian advances over the past two and a half years, as the war approaches its fourth anniversary.

Ukraine appears keen to demonstrate to the world — and specifically to US President Donald Trump — that it is not losing ground, amid Washington’s calls for Kyiv to consider a peace deal.

Syrskyi did not clarify how much of the territory had previously been under Russian control and how much lay in “grey zone” areas not firmly held by either side.

Frontline control has grown increasingly blurred as thousands of drones operate daily, forcing troops underground or into cover and creating zones where neither side exercises full authority.

Trump has previously argued that Ukraine should make concessions to avoid losing the war, which began when Russia launched a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. Kyiv and its European allies have rejected this narrative, highlighting that Russia has captured just over 1% of Ukraine’s territory since 2023 at great cost, while Moscow’s key oil infrastructure faces growing threats from Ukrainian drone strikes.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday praised Ukraine’s “astonishing” gains in February, saying they underscored that Kyiv’s resistance has been more effective than often portrayed.
