A series of deadly explosions struck Lviv in western Ukraine early Sunday morning, with authorities treating the incident as a terrorist attack. The blasts occurred after police responded to an emergency call about an intrusion at a shop near the city centre. One explosion went off soon after officers arrived, followed by a second when additional personnel reached the scene.
Policewoman killed, dozens injured
A 23-year-old policewoman, Viktoria Shpylka, was killed in the attack. Around two dozen people, including police personnel and civilians, were injured. A patrol car and a civilian vehicle were also damaged, the regional prosecutor’s office said, adding that an investigation has been launched into what it described as “a terrorist act causing serious consequences”.
Suspect detained, probe underway
President Volodymyr Zelensky said a suspect linked to the explosions had been detained, while authorities continue efforts to establish the circumstances and identify those responsible. Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovy termed the incident “an act of terror” and expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
Strikes reported across Ukraine
The attack comes despite Lviv’s reputation as a relative safe haven far from front-line combat zones. Ukrainian officials also reported intensified aerial strikes by Russia in recent days, with missiles and drones targeting infrastructure in several cities, including Kyiv, Sumy and Odesa. At least one person was reported killed in Kyiv.
Civilian infrastructure impacted
Among the sites hit in separate strikes was a facility belonging to Mondelez in northern Ukraine, highlighting the widening impact of the conflict on civilian infrastructure and economic assets.
