The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has received a list of more than 900 Indian nationals set to be released from correctional facilities in the United Arab Emirates, following a humanitarian directive issued by the UAE leadership in late November 2025.
The directive was announced ahead of the UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations, which coincide with National Day on December 2 and mark the 1971 unification of the seven emirates.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the release of several inmates across the country as part of the initiative.
As part of the humanitarian gesture, the UAE leadership also committed to covering financial penalties, including fines or compensation imposed on the released inmates as part of their sentences.
The move is aimed at easing the financial burden on families and supporting the reintegration of those released.
Officials said the decision reflected the UAE’s long-standing commitment to humanitarian values.
“It offers those released an opportunity for a new beginning, eases the burden on their families, and brings relief to their loved ones,” an official said.
The move adds to a series of goodwill gestures by the UAE towards Indian nationals.
The country is home to one of the largest Indian diasporas globally, with more than 3.5 million Indian citizens living and working there.
Strong India-UAE ties, underpinned by trade, investment and cultural links, have often been accompanied by such humanitarian cooperation.
