US President Donald Trump is planning to change the colour of his official planes, the Air Force One, fulfilling the Republican leader’s long-cherished dream of overhauling the look of the jets that fly him all over the world.
The new colours will be applied to the new Boeing 747s, which will serve as Air Force One. The planes will feature red, white, gold and dark blue, a colour scheme that was proposed by Trump in his first term but later reversed by Joe Biden, according to a report by CNN.
“Air Force One is going to be incredible. It’s going to be the top of the line, the top in the world. And it’s going to be red, white and blue, which I think is appropriate,” Trump said in 2018.
The aircraft used as Air Force One has featured a baby blue and white colour scheme since the Kennedy administration, and Trump’s proposed redesign fueled speculation that he wanted to mirror the look of his personal Boeing 757.
In 2022, the Air Force rejected the plan for the body colour changes under former President Biden, saying, “Further analysis concluded darker colours, among other factors, on the underside of the VC-25B aircraft might contribute to temperatures exceeding the current qualification limits of a small number of components.”
But Trump’s proposed changes gained momentum after he took office for the second time in 2025, when a dummy of the Air Force with his preferred colour scheme was displayed on the evening of his inauguration on top of a cake at the Commander-in-Chief Ball.
The Air Force says the new livery will be used on two Boeing 747s currently being modified by Boeing, as well as on a 747 donated to the military by Qatar that Trump has directed to be retrofitted for service as Air Force One. The Qatari aircraft could enter service as early as this summer.
The updated colour scheme will also be added during routine maintenance to four smaller C-32 aircraft, the military variant of the Boeing 757, that are already part of the fleet.
