Trump said he held a “good and very productive” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Miami. The talks at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort are expected to focus on a potential peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

US President Donald Trump said he held what he described as a “good and very productive” telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of his scheduled talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the call took place before the 1 pm (local time) meeting and confirmed that discussions with Zelenskyy would be held in the main dining room at his Mar-a-Lago resort, with the press invited.

“I just had a good and very productive telephone call with President Putin of Russia prior to my meeting, at 1:00 pm today, with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine. The meeting will take place in the main dining room of Mar-a-Lago. Press is invited. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he wrote.

The diplomatic engagement comes amid one of the heaviest waves of Russian attacks in recent weeks. Ukrainian officials said three guided aerial bombs hit residential buildings in the eastern city of Sloviansk overnight, killing one man and injuring three others. This followed a large-scale attack on Kyiv on Saturday involving ballistic missiles and drones, which left at least one person dead and 27 injured as explosions echoed across the capital for hours.

Zelenskyy arrived in Miami on Sunday ahead of his meeting with Trump, where the two leaders are expected to discuss a possible peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war. According to a CNN report, the talks are scheduled to take place later in the day at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, as the US steps up efforts to broker an end to the conflict, now Europe’s deadliest war since World War II.

Ahead of the meeting, Zelenskyy said he would present a new 20-point peace plan. The proposal includes the idea of a demilitarised zone and is also expected to address future US security guarantees for Ukraine.

Trump has indicated he is not rushing to endorse the proposal. “He doesn’t have anything until I approve it. So we’ll see what he’s got,” he told Politico, signalling a cautious approach to the talks.

The remarks underline how heavily Ukraine’s future depends on persuading Trump, who has at times appeared willing to tilt towards Russia in pursuit of ending the war. While Moscow has shown little movement from its position, the US has pushed Kyiv to step back from some of its earlier demands.
