Tricia McLaughlin, one of the most visible defenders of Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, is set to leave her role as spokeswoman for the US Department of Homeland Security this week.
Her departure marks the end of a high-profile tenure during one of the most contentious periods in US immigration politics.
McLaughlin had initially planned to step down in December. However, she stayed on longer following fatal confrontations between immigration officers and two US citizens in Minnesota last month, according to CBS News.
Confirming the news, DHS Secretary
Kristi Noem praised McLaughlin’s record, saying she “has served with exceptional dedication, tenacity, and professionalism”.
“She has played an instrumental role in advancing our mission to secure the homeland and keep Americans safe,” said Noem.
“While we are sad to see her leave, we are grateful for her service and wish Tricia nothing but success.”
Praise and pushback
During her time at DHS, McLaughlin frequently became the public voice for both Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, defending enforcement actions across press briefings, podcasts, and social media.
Her exit quickly drew sharp political reactions.
Conservative commentators praised her as a key defender of Trump’s immigration agenda. But critics were equally vocal. Democratic National Committee spokesperson Kendall Witmer accused her of backing controversial enforcement methods, saying she had “defended even the most violent tactics” used in the
immigration crackdown.
Exit amid funding fight
McLaughlin’s departure comes at a tense moment for DHS.
Lawmakers remain locked in a funding standoff, with Democrats demanding operational changes to ICE. The department’s funding was shut off Saturday, and a resolution may not come until later this month.
Public opinion appears to be shifting too.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found growing dissatisfaction with Trump’s immigration policies, with 55% disapproving—up sharply from 44% a year earlier.
What comes next
McLaughlin’s next move remains unclear. According to CBS, she is expected to be replaced by Katie Zacharia, a commentator who has appeared on Fox News.
She previously served in the Trump administration at the US Treasury Department and later worked as a spokeswoman for Vivek Ramaswamy’s presidential campaign—cementing her reputation as a prominent voice in Republican political circles.
