Hundreds turned out in south Minneapolis to mourn Renee Nicole Good, the 37-year-old woman shot and killed by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent during a federal enforcement operation

A routine federal immigration enforcement operation turned deadly on Wednesday morning when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed 37-year-old
Renee Nicole Good in south Minneapolis, causing a wave of shock, grief and protest.

Good, a US citizen and mother of three, was in her vehicle when the shooting unfolded, authorities and witnesses say, according to the Associated Press.

Video footage of the incident shows federal agents near Good’s SUV as she attempted to move away, and another agent firing into the vehicle at close range. Good’s mother described her daughter as a compassionate writer and devoted parent, unrelated to the protests and political clashes between enforcing agents and local residents.

Hundreds of people gathered at a vigil on Wednesday evening on the residential street where Good was killed, with many holding signs slamming the ICE operation and demanding justice. Speakers at the event said Good did not deserve to be gunned down. “She posed absolutely no threat to ICE agents,” one eyewitness told MPR News.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has publicly challenged the federal account, saying video reviewed by city officials does not support claims of a justified use of force, and urging ICE to leave the city.

Good’s former alma mater released a statement following her fatal shooting. The 37-year-old earned an English degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, in December 2020, and the university president expressed deep sorrow over her passing.

“It is with great sadness that Old Dominion University mourns the loss of one of our own, Renee (Macklin) Good, a proud Monarch who graduated in December of 2020 from the College of Arts and Letters with a degree in English,” Brian O. Hemphill wrote in a statement released on the university’s official website.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the agent’s actions, calling the encounter as an “act of domestic terrorism” and insisting agents acted out of self-defence.

US President Trump also took to Truth Social and wrote that Good “viciously ran over the ICE officer,” adding that the agent is now recovering in a hospital.

“I have just viewed the clip of the event which took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a horrible thing to watch. The woman screaming was, obviously, a professional agitator, and the woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense. Based on the attached clip, it is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital,” Trump wrote.
