The boxy and cool Toyota Land Cruiser FJ has made its public debut at the ongoing Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo and the big news is that the SUV is coming to India in late 2028. In fact, India will be one of the production bases for the model which could be the first product to roll out from Toyota’s new Chatrapati Sambhaji Nagar plant in Maharashtra.

  1. Toyota Land Cruiser FJ shares ladder-frame chassis with Fortuner
  2. India-spec Land Cruiser FJ will have multiple petrol and hybrid options

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ engines and platform

Land Cruiser FJ based on IMV ladder frame chassis; no diesel engine planned

The FJ is the new entry point to Toyota’s fabled Land Cruiser line-up of SUVs and true to tradition features a body-on-frame construction. The hardy IMV platform that also underpins the Fortuner, Innova Crysta and Hilux will form the base of the Land Cruiser FJ. However, the India market FJ will be quite different to its IMV siblings in its powertrains. For one, there won’t be any diesel engine on offer. You read that right.

To be offered with petrol, strong hybrid and PHEV but no diesel

Meeting increasingly stringent emission targets with a heavy ladder frame would be tough enough and opting for a diesel would have made the task tougher still. However, on the cards for India is a 163hp and 246Nm, 2.7-litre petrol as well as a strong hybrid and a plug-in hybrid option. The model displayed at JMS 2025 featured a 6-speed automatic gearbox and part-time 4WD system.

The 4,575mm long Land Cruiser FJ is significantly shorter than the current Fortuner (4795mm). Being a ladder frame SUV with 4×4, the Land Cruiser FJ would be conceptually closest to the Mahindra Scorpio N (4,662mm). There is the promise of good off-road ability with 215mm of ground clearance and what Toyota describes as “wheel articulation and approach angle worthy of a Land Cruiser”. Of the other dimensions of note is the FJ’s 2,580mm wheelbase (vs the Scorpio N’s 2750mm.

Styling on the FJ is chunky with exaggerated body panels and bold cladding, and there are also plenty of details that link the FJ to the larger Land Cruisers in the family. Elements like the short overhangs and spare wheel mounted on the side-opening tail gate lend the FJ rugged appeal.

The chunky and rugged appearance carries on to the interior too. There are plenty of physical buttons and knobs though a 12.5-inch touchscreen and digital dials are also part of the package. On close inspection, we found cabin quality hardy but not what you’d call plush.

Space at the back is decent but no more and getting in also requires a big step up. Creature comforts at the back include seat recline though a sunroof and rear air-con vents were missing on the display car. Notably, the FJ has been revealed as a two row, five seat model.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ India price estimate

Land Cruiser FJ prices could start at Rs 30 lakh

Land Cruiser FJ (code: 900D) production will commence in India in August 2008 with Toyota looking to produce 89,000 units a year. 40,000 units will be earmarked for exports to markets like the Middle East. The SUV will be heavily localised and buzz is that Land Cruiser FJ prices could start at around Rs 30 lakh (estimated, ex-showroom) with PHEV versions expected to command a significant premium.
