Cuba will be the next target of the American regime‑change campaign after Venezuela and Iran, Senator Lindsey Graham, a top ally of President Donald Trump, has said.
In an interview with Fox News, Graham on Sunday said that Cuba’s communist regime is “going to fall” and its “days are numbered”.
“Maduro? Everybody talked about him. Well, Donald Trump’s got him in jail! Cuba’s next. They’re gonna fall. This communist dictatorship in Cuba? Their days are numbered,” said Graham.
As for the
US-Israeli war on Iran, Graham said, “The Iranian regime, the mothership of international terrorism is about to collapse, The captain of the ship, the Ayatollah, is stone cold dead.”
For months,
Trump has suggested toppling the regime in Cuba and taking over the country. As Cuba has been part of the Russia’s orbit just like Venezuela, he and his interventionist allies like Secretary of State Marco Rubio have explored ousting the country’s government and replacing it with a loyalist.
The United States and Cuba have had tense relations since 1959
when Fidel Castro took over the country and set up the one-party system. He also nationalised US interests in the country that would be worth around $11 billion today.
In the Cold War, Cuba emerged as the Soviet Union’s bastion in the United States’ neighbourhood. Successive administrations, most notably the Ronald Regan administration, ramped up pressure on the country, which included a complete embargo, military coercion, and designation of state sponsor of terrorism. But the regime persisted even as its economy tanked and hardships mounted.
Graham has suggested that Trump would finish Regan’s unfinished agenda in Cuba.
“I am a big admirer of Ronald Reagan, but I’m here to tell you that Donald Trump is the gold standard for Republicans, maybe any president, when it comes to foreign policy,” said Graham.
