Idrissa Gueye floored teammate Michael Keane in a wild Everton bust-up as Ruben Amorim’s Man United fall again at the Old Trafford.
Manchester United suffered another defeat as they went down 1-0 to Everton on Monday in the English Premier League, but it was the altercation between Everton teammates Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane that made all the headlines. Midfielder Gueye was red-carded as early as the 13th minute for striking defender Keane.
Meanwhile, it was the first victory for David Moyes at Old Trafford as the manager of a visiting team after 17 failed attempts. While reflecting on the victory, the former Man United coach Moyes defended Gueye over the fracas.
Everton shocker as Gueye strikes Keane
Moyes revealed that the Senegalese had apologised for the incident and added that he was happy to see his players fight among each other.
“These things happen in football, I thought the referee could maybe have taken a little bit longer to think about it,” Moyes said. “I’m getting told the rules are that if you slap your own player or raise an arm in some way you can be in trouble. But, you know, there’s another side of it.
“I quite like my own players fighting each other and getting annoyed with each other because of a bad ball or someone didn’t do the right action. If you want a winning team, with the resilience and toughness that got us the result, then I think you’ve got to have players that are going to react in that way.”

Gueye has also apologised for the red card and the incident in a social media post.
“I want to apologise first to my teammate Michael Keane. I take full responsibility for my reaction,” he wrote on Instagram.
“I also apologise to my teammates, the staff, the fans and the club. What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for. Emotions can run high, but nothing justifies such behaviour.
“I’ll make sure it never happens again.”
While explaining Gueye’s red card, the Premier League match centre said: “The referee’s call of red card to Gueye for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR — with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane.”
