Tata’s new vehicle architecture, ATLAS, has made its debut on the Curvv coupe-SUV that went on sale today in EV form. The word ATLAS stands for Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle Architecture, according to Tata Motors.
- Atlas becomes fifth platform for Tata Motors
- Will underpin future EV and ICE models
- Sierra SUV will be based on Atlas platform
This new platform form Tata will underpin its future internal combustion-powered and electric cars and SUVs. The platform will be able to cater models from 3.9 to 4.6 meters in length. It supports multiple body styles that include SUVs, coupe SUVs, sedans and hatchbacks.
Mohan Savarkar, vice president and chief product officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, noted that, “The platform can accommodate multiple powertrains and full SUV capability. The architecture has an updated electric architecture with cloud platform.”
The ATLAS uses a continuous framework which eliminates any abrupt changes in the road path for better crashworthiness and safety. In the event of a crash, impact loads are pushed through multiple road paths to enable a uniform and symmetric performance, claimed Savarkar. He further added, “In a world of software on wheels, the ATLAS platform, which scales in size, body style and segment, supports future technologies with an advanced electric architecture and cloud platform.”
The curb includes an integrated cockpit-to-wheel controller, to support multiple displays, a centralised body controller and over 24 PCUs. The ATLAS platform can have multiple powertrains including petrol and diesel engines, each with manual and automatic transmissions, Savarkar added.
The new Tata ATLAS platform will help the brand expand the addressable market from 53 percent at present to 65 percent after the launch. The company eventually wants to cater to 80 percent of the addressable market by the end of the decade. At the moment, 66 percent of Tata Motors total sales are from the SUV segment. The Nexon has been the largest selling SUV in India for three consecutive years.
The company did not share details of the investment in the new platform, but it has committed to investing 6-8 percent of its revenues in the coming years. This translates to Rs 45,000 crore by the end of the decade.
Apart from the Curvv EV that went on sale today, the upcoming Sierra SUV will also be based on the ATLAS architecture. The Nexon compact SUV may also move on this platform in the future. Prices for the Curvv petrol and diesel will be announced on Sepember 2.
