Amid the rift between China and Taiwan, Taiwan’s intelligence official on Wednesday said that Chinese military aircraft have “stimulated attacks” on the foreign ships through sea waters separating China and Taiwan.
It has been stated that the Chinese military occasionally simulates attacks on foreign naval ships in the Taiwan Strait.
This escalated the regional tensions, China stated that Taiwan is part of its territory and claims laws over the Taiwanese strait.
China has continuously claimed its power over Taiwan while the United States, Britain and other countries view the strait as international water open to all vessels.
Taiwan’s National Security Bureau director-general Tsai Ming-yen revealed on Wednesday that eight countries, including the United States, Japan, Australia and France, have sent naval ships through the narrow stretch of water so far this year.
“It will deploy corresponding naval assets to conduct necessary monitoring, and at times… it will also mobilise air forces to carry out simulated attacks to signal its military presence and claim of dominance in the Strait,” Tsai said.
Taiwan exchanges intelligence with its “international allies”, including on Chinese military activity during these transits, he further added.
Tensions have worsened along the strait in recent years as China has increased military pressure on Taiwan and Taipei has ramped up its defence spending.
Recently the Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi commented on China over its claim to capture Taiwan and claiming Taiwan as part of its territory. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te last week unveiled plans for $40 billion in extra defence spending over the next eight years, with a focus on developing a multi-layered air defence system.
