A senior Russian military officer was shot and seriously injured in Moscow on Friday, in what authorities described as a suspected assassination attempt, adding to a string of high-profile attacks on Russian officials since the war in Ukraine began.
A senior Russian military official, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, was rushed to hospital after being shot in Moscow on Friday, state media reported, citing investigators.
Alexeyev is the deputy chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff at the Defence Ministry. He was among the top officials sent to negotiate with Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin during the short-lived mutiny in June 2023.
The Moscow prosecutor’s office said Alexeyev was shot several times at a residential building in northwest Moscow. The attacker fled the scene and has not yet been identified.
Several senior Russian military officers have been assassinated since the start of the war in Ukraine, with Moscow blaming Kyiv for the attacks. In some cases, Ukrainian military intelligence has claimed responsibility.
The most recent killing involved Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the General Staff’s army training directorate, who was killed by a bomb placed under his car on December 22.
This is a developing story.
