At least 15 miners were killed and seven others injured on Sunday when a Russian drone struck a bus outside Pavlohrad in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, according to The Kyiv Independent, citing Ukraine’s largest private energy company DTEK.
The attack took place during a wider Russian offensive targeting DTEK mines.
The bus, carrying miners after their shift, was hit in the town of Ternivka.
Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed the strike, highlighting the ongoing threat to civilians in the area.
“The service bus was carrying mine workers — civilians who were not involved in the combat. This is yet another brutal attack with casualties, just for today,” The Kyiv Independent quoted Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets as saying.
Earlier on Sunday, Russia carried out two strikes on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, injuring at least nine people, including a child.
One of the attacks reportedly targeted a maternity hospital.
The strikes occurred amid ongoing efforts to negotiate a peace deal involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.
The attacks further strained Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which was already in crisis. On January 29, US President Donald Trump announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to suspend attacks on Ukrainian cities for one week.
Moscow later clarified that the ceasefire would only apply to Kyiv and would last until February 1, just ahead of the next cold snap.
