When Rajpal Yadav spent 3 months in jail in 2018

In 2018, Rajpal Yadav served a three-month sentence in Tihar Jail after defaulting on a Rs. 5 crore loan he had taken in 2010 from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. The money was borrowed to finance his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata, which failed to perform at the box office.

Following repeated cheque bounces and prolonged legal proceedings, a court convicted Rajpal and sentenced him to imprisonment. Though he appealed the verdict, he eventually served three months in jail before being released.

Actor recalls his time inside Tihar Jail

In an earlier interaction with Siddharth Kannan, Rajpal had opened up about his time in prison and said the experience deeply impacted him. He revealed that he conducted workshops for fellow inmates and tried to bring positivity within the prison environment.

He recalled, “After three months, when I was leaving from there, the jail superintendent and the staff gave me two certificates instead of one. He said, ‘This place is very historic and in my whole life I have not seen someone like you. We got inspired by you.’”

Lost ancestral property worth crores

Apart from his jail term, Rajpal’s financial struggles also led to the loss of his ancestral property in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. In 2024, a portion of the property was sealed by the Central Bank of India after he failed to repay an Rs. 11 crore loan, which had accumulated due to interest and penalties.

Why Rajpal Yadav is in jail now
