Brazil’s leading goalscorer Neymar underwent a successful knee surgery on Monday. He would now hope to get fit in time for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Neymar’s chances of featuring at the FIFA Club World Cup 2026 has been boosted as the star Brazilian footballer underwent a successful knee surgery on Monday. Brazil’s opening game at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is against Morocco on 16 June 2026 at East Rutherford in New Jersey, USA.
Neymar last played for Brazil on October 17, 2023, in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, but the country’s leading goalscorer is hoping to play in the FIFA event next year. For that, he would need to be fit, but a knee issue had been plaguing him for a while.
Neymar undergoes knee surgery
On Monday, Neymar underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee, his club Santos said. The surgery was conducted by the Brazilian national football team’s doctor Rodrigo Lasmar.
“An arthroscopy was performed to treat a medial meniscus injury. The surgery was a success, and the athlete is doing well,” Santos said.
The club has not clarified how long it will take for Neymar to get fit, but Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte has reported that Neymar would be out of action for a month.
In such a scenario, Neymar, who has scored 79 goals in 128 matches, would target a return to the Brazilian side during the FIFA international window in March 2026.
But a lot will depend on coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has already announced that only those who are 100% fit
will be considered for the Brazil national football team.
“There are many high-quality players and I need to choose those who are at 100 per cent,” Ancelotti said earlir this month. “It’s not just about Neymar; it could be Vinicius. If Vinicius is at 90 per cent, I will call up another player who is at 100 per cent, because this is a team with a very high level of competitiveness, especially in attack, where we have many excellent players.”
Brazil also face Scotland and Haiti in Group C of the FIFA World Cup.
