Space Gen: Chandrayaan is the new show that has come out of the minds of TVF- The Viral Fever. It’s a series that talks about likely heroes and unlikely challenges and circumstances. After the unexpected outcome of India’s Chandrayaan 2 lunar mission, a team of space engineers seek redemption and attempt to make history. Most of the drama and conflict unfolds inside the space research centre and you know that this show will have to rely on solid performances and neat visual effects. The final result is almost hit and miss. Not because the intent sticks out like a sore thumb but because we have seen such stories before. It runs on thunderous but tedious grounds.
There is a lot of chaos happening and rightly so because the unsung heroes of the nation want to make history. They want to succeed the second time after failing the first time. This is what we were shown in Jagan Shakti’s 2019
_Mission Mangal_, which was a blend of searing and silly. To give credit where it’s due, Space Gen: Chandrayaan at least steers clear from scenes that take away the essence of the show. The good thing about the streaming platforms is how intricate some storylines can be. We get to spend more time with people who we both love and loathe. But this is a show where unexpected circumstances could be the biggest antagonist. When was making history ever easy?
The cast is impressive- Nakuul Mehta,
Shriya Saran, Danish Sait, Prakash Belawadi. Belawadi is an actor who can be both charming and cantankerous. He was like that in outings like Talvar and Airlift– Both based on true stories. And this web series takes us back in time as well. Most of us may have just skimmed the surface while reading or watching this iconic triumph of the nation. Everything in the show cannot be real, there are cinematic liberties for greater effect, but the central conflict is true. The performances are almost satisfactory. Belawadi as expected shines and steals the show. Mehta and Saran give their best show but the intensity that was needed to make us root for them completely is slightly missing.
Space Gen: Chandrayaan could be a leap for TVF. This is a clutter breaking company that has made a career out of telling stories that matter and that resonate with one and all. They have penned people we know, we have met, we want to root for, and perhaps we want to be or have been. They have always shone in telling stories about the ground realities of the nation. With their new show, they aim for the skies. They almost do it!
