Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed growing concerns among young people that artificial intelligence could lead to widespread job losses, saying preparation is the most effective response to fear.
In an interview with ANI as the the India AI Impact Summit 2026 takes shape in New Delhi, he said AI should be viewed as a partner to human intelligence rather than a replacement.
Drawing parallels with past technological shifts, the Prime Minister said innovation has historically reshaped the nature of work rather than destroyed it. From the Industrial Revolution to the rise of the internet, each wave of change triggered anxiety about employment but ultimately created new sectors and opportunities. He expressed confidence that the AI era would follow a similar trajectory by generating new categories of high-quality technology jobs.
AI as a force multiplier for human capability
Describing AI as a “force multiplier,” he said the technology would enhance human capability by enabling professionals such as doctors, teachers and lawyers to serve more people with greater efficiency and precision. In this view, AI supports human dignity by allowing individuals to focus on creative and high-value work while automation handles routine tasks.
Skilling push to protect India’s demographic dividend
To safeguard India’s demographic dividend, the Prime Minister highlighted the government’s focus on large-scale skilling and reskilling initiatives, calling AI-driven disruption a present imperative rather than a future challenge. He pointed to India’s ranking of third globally in the Stanford Global AI Vibrancy Index 2025 as evidence of the country’s growing strength in AI talent and research. He added that with the support of the IndiaAI Mission, India’s youth are equipped not only to adapt but to lead in the future of work.
Readiness over fear in a changing economy
Acknowledging global anxieties over job security amid technological change, he reiterated that readiness, not fear, should guide the response. According to him, digital transformation will expand opportunities in emerging technology sectors and support economic growth, while AI will amplify human potential and push the boundaries of innovation.
From consumer to creator: India’s long-term AI vision
Emphasising India’s long-term strategy, the Prime Minister said the country must move beyond being a consumer of advanced technology and become a global creator, linking this vision to Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He outlined three guiding principles for India’s AI ambitions: technological sovereignty, inclusive growth and innovation-driven leadership.
AI integrated into everyday life
Looking ahead, he said AI will become deeply integrated into everyday life, empowering citizens and strengthening public services. He envisioned Indian AI systems serving global populations in multiple languages, domestic startups achieving international scale and India emerging as a responsible global leader in the digital age guided by national values and human dignity.
