Minneapolis continued to see protestors braving the icy weather conditions to rally against the deployment of ICE agents and the deaths of two US citizens in a span of one month.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis and neighbouring St. Paul to identify and detain immigrants in President Donald Trump’s push against “illegal aliens”.
Around 3,000 ICE agents are deployed in the state, which is nearly five times more than the local law enforcement force.
In freezing temperatures, protesters in Minneapolis carried posters with slogans like “ICE OUT NOW!” while calling for the removal of the current administration. Many demonstrators held images of Renee Good and demanded the impeachment of President Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
“I don’t think our federal government should be terrorising our people like this,” Sushma Santhana, 24, told AFP as protesters chanted “our streets!” around her.

DOJ orders civil rights probe on Pretti’s killing

US Justice Department has started a civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis, a senior official said on Friday.
The department’s investigation could potentially lead to criminal charges against the officers involved, though there is a high legal bar to bring such a case.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the FBI was examining Saturday’s shooting with potential assistance from the department’s Civil Rights Division, which typically plays a leading role in investigations into use of force by law enforcement. He cautioned that the review was preliminary and he downplayed its scope.
“This is what I would describe as a standard investigation by the FBI when there’s circumstances like what we saw last Saturday,” Blanche said at a news conference.
