Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday said she had a “good conversation” with US President Donald Trump, focusing on security and efforts to curb drug trafficking.

On Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente about the need for closer cooperation to dismantle Mexico’s violent narco-terrorist networks and curb the trafficking of fentanyl and weapons, Reuters quoted State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott as saying in a statement.

The discussions come after US President Donald Trump, in remarks to Fox News last week, claimed that cartels were effectively running Mexico and suggested that the US could target land-based cartel operations.

His comments mark the latest in a series of escalating threats to deploy US military force against drug cartels operating within Mexican territory.

Responding to the conversation, Sheinbaum said on X that “collaboration and cooperation within a framework of mutual respect always yield results.”
