Bangladesh Protests Live Updates: A riot-like situation erupted in Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader of the country’s 2024 pro-democracy uprising. On Thursday night and early Friday, thousands took to the streets of the country’s capital, Dhaka, demanding justice for the slain activist.

Hadi died in a hospital in Singapore after succumbing to gunshot injuries sustained in an assassination attempt last week. Violent demonstrations rapidly spread from Dhaka to other parts of the country, with protesters raising “anti-India” slogans.

Bangladesh Protests Live Updates: Violence has been raging on in the capital of
Bangladesh after 32-year-old
Sharif Osman Hadi died in a hospital after succumbing to injuries. Hadi was a key figure in last year’s uprising that ended the autocratic rule of the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, and sent her fleeing to India.

On December 12, the youth leader was shot by masked assailants while he was leaving a mosque in Dhaka. At least three cases of arson were reported in Dhaka after the news of his death spread early Friday. The incidents included a fire at the Daily Star building and another at a building housing the Prothom Alo newspaper.

The two papers are the largest in the country, but protesters accused them of being aligned with neighbouring India, where Hasina has taken refuge. Employees were trapped inside the building while the protesters indulged in vandalism.

Violence was also reported in several cities across Bangladesh, including Chattogram. With the Awami League building torched by the protesters.
