Boong, backed by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures, has added another international feather to its cap with a nomination at the BAFTA Awards in the Children’s and Family Film category. The nod marks a significant milestone in the film’s steadily growing global journey.
Other films in the category include Arco, Lilo & Stitch and Zootropolis 2.
A major international recognition
Presented annually by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the BAFTA Awards are among the most respected honours in global cinema.
_Boong_’s nomination places it alongside some of the most acclaimed family-oriented films internationally, underlining its resonance beyond Indian and festival circuits.
The recognition follows an eventful international run for the film, which has travelled widely across film festivals and picked up critical appreciation and awards along the way.
Why Boong has struck a chord
Set against the cultural landscape of Manipur,
_Boong_ is known for its restrained storytelling that blends humour, emotion and regional specificity. Its narrative simplicity and emotional clarity have been repeatedly cited as key reasons for its appeal, particularly among younger audiences and families.
The film’s theatrical release in select cities saw sold-out shows, with demand extending beyond its initial screening locations, indicating strong word-of-mouth among cinephiles.
Festival journey and release details
Written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, where it first drew international attention. The film was released theatrically in India on 19 September 2025.
Produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures, the BAFTA nomination further strengthens the film’s position as one of the more prominent Indian children’s and family films to gain sustained international recognition in recent years.
