Mahindra will equip the Thar Armada with three engines and two gearbox options.

The upcoming Thar 5-door, which will likely be called Thar Armada, will be Mahindra’s next big launch in India. Expected to go on sale in the coming months, the Thar Armada will be equipped with a range of first-in-class features such as a panoramic sunroof as well as ADAS level 2, Autocar India can now confirm.

  1. Thar Armada to get panoramic sunroof – first for any ladder-frame SUV in India
  2. Top-end variants to get ADAS Level 2, dual 10.25-inch displays
  3. Unofficial bookings open at dealer level

Recent spy shots helped ascertain that the Thar 5-door will get a dual-pane sunroof, at least on the top-end variant. Test mules in the past have also been spied with a single-pane sunroof, which will likely be on offer on mid-level variants. The panoramic sunroof will make it the only ladder-frame SUV in India to be offered with this feature.

Furthermore, the Thar Armada will get ADAS level 2 safety features that could include lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring, forward collision avoidance warning and assist, and so on.

Mahindra Thar Armada: what else will it get

Apart from a panoramic sunroof and ADAS, the Thar 5-door will be equipped with a range of other features such as a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a similarly-sized fully-digital instrument cluster, all-LED lighting, and much more. There will be three different wheel designs on offer – steel wheels for the entry-level variant(s), alloy wheels for mid-level variants and diamond-cut alloy wheels which will likely be reserved for the top-end trim.

Mahindra Thar Armada: 2 diesels, 1 petrol engine

The Thar Armada will have three powertrain options: an entry-level 1.5-litre diesel that will give the SUV an aggressive entry price, a 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol. We expect the latter two engine options to get 4WD and the entry-level 1.5 diesel to be available with a rear-wheel drive setup only.

Mahindra Thar Armada: launch timeline, rivals

Unofficial bookings for the upcoming Thar Armada have commenced at dealership level, however, there is no announcement from Mahindra yet. Upon arrival, the lifestyle SUV will directly rival the recently launched Force Gurkha 5-door, as well as Maruti Jimny. It will also serve as an alternative to mid-size SUVs such as Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, among others.
