At least two people died and about 150 wounded after lightning struck the annual festival in South Africa’s capital Pretoria. Authorities informed that the ones injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

At least two people died and about 150 injured after lightning struck the annual festival in South Africa’s capital Pretoria, local health services informed on Sunday.  

The incident occurred on Saturday night near the village of Mathibestad, about 70 kilometres (40 miles) of Pretoria, where a traditional celebration is held every year.

Authorities informed that the ones injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.  

The North West health department said 150 patients came to a health clinic after being struck by lightning during the event, adding that two died and 13 were in critical condition and transferred to another health facility.

Thousands gathered at Dertig Sports Ground, next to Mphebatho Library, on Saturday to celebrate the annual festival often marking the togetherness of different cultural groups, and leaders for a vibrant music event that promotes unity and social cohesion.  

The Mayor of Moretele, Masango George will visit the affected families on Sunday and offer support and condolences after the devastating incident.  

Moretele Local Municipality spokesperson Mothupi Malebye shared details of the incident that marred the festival.

“Due to bad weather, more than ten people were struck by lightning, and unfortunately, two people were declared dead. Emergency services arrived quickly, and all other injured individuals received medical care,” Malebye said.

“For safety reasons, the festival was put on hold immediately. This decision was made to protect everyone at the event, including community members, performers, and officials,” he added.
