Russia has openly welcomed the new US National Security Strategy (NSS), with the Kremlin stating that the document’s drastic policy adjustments are “largely consistent” with Moscow’s own worldview.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesman, said that the current US administration is “fundamentally different from the previous ones,” suggesting that President Trump’s currently strong “domestic political positions” afford him the opportunity to tailor the concept to his personal vision. This ability to make such sweeping changes, according to Peskov, aligns with Moscow’s assessment of current global dynamics.
The new NSS, released on Friday, signals a major departure from past American foreign policy, notably taking aim at traditional allies in Europe. The document harshly criticised the continent as over-regulated and lacking in “self-confidence,” further alleging it faces “civilizational erasure” due to uncontrolled immigration trends—a highly controversial statement that resonated with long-standing Kremlin narratives about the West.
Crucially, the US strategy affirmed it would continue efforts to prevent other powers from achieving global dominance, but added it would not “waste blood and treasure to curtail the influence of all the world’s great and middle powers.” This line is widely perceived in Moscow as a favourable signal, suggesting a potential US pullback from confronting Russian influence globally.
