Japan PM Sanae Takaichi’s “work, work, work, work,” comment became a catchphrase all over the internet and drew criticism. She later clarified her remark came from her strong desire to contribute to the country and its people.
After being elected as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on October 4 and later becoming the first female Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi’s catchphrase of “work, work, work, work” is all over the internet.
She made this remark after winning the leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party and said that she would “work, work, work, work” on behalf of her country. This phrase clearly struck a chord, even more than Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Work-life balance
She became the first ever female Prime Minister of Japan beating about two dozen other candidates. Stating and clarifying that she will abandon the life-work balance in her own life gained criticism for the statement, “I will have everyone work like a horse,” Takaichi told her fellow LDP lawyers and workers.
Lawyers victims of karoshi, or death from overwork described the statement as unhelpful and posing a burden on the workers despite overlooking their personal sector.
No intention of encouraging overwork
Attending the award ceremony in Tokyo, Takaichi explained her remark came from her strong desire to contribute to the country and its people, saying, “I had no intention of encouraging overwork or to suggest that working long hours are a virtue.”
During the award ceremony, the organisers stated that among the other catchphrases “First female prime minister” was the second most popular; others included “Trump’s tariffs”, “bear damage,” and “old, old, old rice.”
Bear damage is used for the incident that occurred in Japan where a bear attacked a man in the public toilet and the increasing attacks of bears in the country. While old, old, old rice refer to the rice harvested in the fiscal year 2021 that the government had stockpiled and released amid rice shortages.
Takaichi is working under pressure amid tensions from China. She is mostly known for her blunt spoken nature, keeping the recent incident of clash over Taiwan, causing the bilateral ties to unravel at an alarming pace.
Japan’s PM is known for explicit statements made recently that a Chinese attack on Taiwan would constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan.
