The wait is finally over. The draw for the first ever 48-team FIFA World Cup takes place on Friday, December 5 in Washington DC with the President of the United States Donald Trump also expected to be in attendance. The full fixture list of the tournament will be released a day after the draw is finalised.
42 sides have already booked their place in the 2026 World Cup that will take place across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Six spots are still left to be taken and a total of 22 teams – 16 from Europe and six from other confederations, are vying for the remaining slots. The final list of all 48 teams will be decided through
UEFA and FIFA play-off matches in March next year.
Friday’s draw will decide the groups of all the teams who have been divided into four pots of 12 teams each as per their FIFA rankings. The nine highest ranked teams along with the three hosts are in the first pot.

While other teams await the draw, the host countries have already been assigned to their groups. Mexico are in Group A while Canada and the United States are in the Group B and D respectively.
For the first time in the history of the tournament,
a seeding system has been introduced that will ensure that the top four teams – Spain, Argentina, France and England – do not meet each other before semifinals if they all win their respective groups.
