Israel has recovered the remains of the last hostage held in Gaza, the military said on Monday, a move that could clear the way for the next phase of the ceasefire agreement.
Israel has retrieved the remains of the final hostage held in Gaza, the military confirmed on Monday, fulfilling a key requirement of US President Donald Trump’s initial plan to end the Gaza conflict.
The remains of police officer Ran Gvili have been identified and will be returned to Israel for burial, the military said in an official statement.
Rafah border reopening pending
Israeli officials said the Rafah border crossing with Egypt — Gaza’s primary gateway to the outside world — will be reopened once Gvili’s remains are handed over or the search for his body concludes.
Gvili had been held in Gaza after being killed at Kibbutz Alumim during Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire in October under pressure from regional powers and Trump, who described the deal as a first step toward a “strong, durable, and everlasting peace.”
This is a developing story.
