In a meeting with a coalition of left‑leaning political parties, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairperson
Tarique Rahman delivered a strong reminder of the country’s historical foundation, saying the nation’s very existence is tied to the
1971 Liberation War.

“The Liberation War is the foundation of Bangladesh as a state and its politics. The country’s very existence cannot be imagined without 1971,” Tarique told leaders of the Democratic United Front (DUF) at the BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Monday.

Tarique used the gathering to stress that Bangladesh is at an important political crossroads. In the wake of recent protests and shifts in the political landscape, he argued that both the government and opposition must seize this moment to work together for the country’s future.

“The new political reality and possibilities that have emerged in the country after the recent uprising must be utilised. Everyone, including the government and the opposition parties, must work together to move the country forward,” he said, urging unity across the political spectrum.

He also highlighted the need to strengthen the democratic system and make use of the current political opportunity.

During the meeting, DUF leaders expressed their deep sorrow and condolences over the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, adding a somber note to the discussions.

Leaders present also touched on pressing issues like the law and order situation and called for free, fair, and broadly accepted elections. Tarique echoed these concerns and made a public appeal for unity in facing national challenges.

Bazlur Rashid Firoz, general secretary of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, summed up the essence of Tarique’s remarks: “Without the Liberation War, Bangladesh’s existence is not possible.” He added that the country must look forward by honouring the aspirations of past mass uprisings.
