India on Thursday criticised Pakistan at the United Nations, accusing it of misusing UN platforms to push a ‘divisive agenda’ by raising the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.
India on Thursday strongly criticised Pakistan at the United Nations for misusing the platform to push a “divisive agenda” after Islamabad’s envoy raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir during the General Assembly.
Eldos Mathew Punnoose, Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, accused Pakistan of spreading baseless allegations and presenting a narrative completely detached from reality. India dismissed Pakistan’s remarks as inappropriate and disconnected from the ground realities.
Pakistan’s politicisation of multilateral forums
Presenting India’s national statement during the UN General Assembly plenary discussion on the Secretary-General’s annual report, Punnoose highlighted Pakistan’s repeated attempts to politicise multilateral platforms. “While the international community is expected to rise above narrow national interests, Pakistan continues to misuse UN mechanisms to advance its agenda,” he said, according to PTI.
He underlined that Pakistan’s reference to Jammu and Kashmir was unjustified, reaffirming that the Union Territory is an inseparable part of India. India’s rebuttal comes amid Islamabad’s ongoing efforts to internationalise the Kashmir issue, which New Delhi says have consistently failed to gain wider global support.
On self-determination and separatist claims
Addressing the principle of self-determination, Punnoose cautioned against its distortion to legitimise separatist movements. While recognising self-determination as a core UN principle, he stressed that it should not be weaponised to encourage fragmentation in democratic and pluralistic societies. He urged Pakistan to refrain from making unfounded allegations that misrepresent reality.
India’s broader global concerns
Beyond bilateral issues, India highlighted challenges faced by the Global South. Punnoose noted India’s efforts to amplify these concerns at the UN and called for concrete follow-up actions to translate collective sentiment into tangible outcomes.
He also expressed concern over the UN’s limited effectiveness in addressing ongoing global conflicts, warning that inaction undermines its credibility. With conflicts escalating worldwide, Punnoose emphasised that the international community looks to the UN to alleviate human suffering and restore peace.
