Currently, only an All-India item-level index for the combined segment is released.
The ministry is also exploring the inclusion of free food distributed under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the new CPI series,
with a plan to compile a combined index capturing prices from PDS and other market sources.
To improve price accuracy, MoSPI is integrating new data sources and has initiated coordination with the Railways and Petroleum Ministries to exclusively use administrative data pertaining to rail fares and fuel prices, including petrol, diesel and LPG. For services such as air travel, telecom and OTT platforms, price feeds may be collected through web-based scraping tools.
The ministry also aims to expand price coverage significantly, with data to be gathered from 1,395 urban markets across 434 towns and 1,465 villages—an addition of 281 urban markets and 284 villages over the current series. Twelve major cities with populations exceeding 25 lakh will also begin reporting e-commerce platform prices.
On the industrial side, the new Index of Industrial Production (IIP) series will broaden sectoral representation beyond the existing basket, incorporating minor minerals and gas supply for the first time .
