There was uncertainty around the league last year after the All India Football Federation (AIFF) failed to renew its agreement with Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the company that operated ISL since its inception in 2014, and the tournament was forced to be delayed.
The ISL 2026 season was originally scheduled to start in September 2025 but the FSDL put it on hold. However, the league was reinstated after intervention from the Indian government, bringing relief to clubs and fans.

A total of 14 teams will compete in the 12th edition of the ISL. Inter Kashi FC earned promotion after winning the I-League 2024-25 season. Hyderabad FC has shifted base and rebranded as Sporting Club Delhi.
Due to the delayed start, this season will be shorter than usual. Instead of the traditional home-and-away format followed by playoffs, all 14 teams will play each other once. The team that finishes on top of the table after 91 matches will be crowned champions. The bottom-placed team will be relegated.
