Changing his tone, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised Kobbie Mainoo ahead of the Newcastle game as he reflected on what the future could be like for the young midfielder at Old Trafford.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has made a U-turn regarding midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, claiming that the youngster is “the future” of the club of Manchester United and that he could soon break into the team on the back of his versatility. Mainoo has not started a single English Premier League game this season at Man United and Amorim has consistently said that the 20-year-old “needs to earn his place” in the team.
But his recent comments are a sharp departure from the previously held stance as Amorim said that a lot of opportunities could come Mainoo’s way as he could execute new systems at the club. Mainoo is set to miss Man United’s match vs Newcastle on Boxing Day (26 December) due to a calf problem, but with
captain Bruno Fernandes also injured, the academy product could get a few matches in the upcoming days.
Amorim: “Mainoo is going to be future of Manchester United”
Talking about Mainoo ahead of the Newcastle game, Amorim said the young player is assured of a great future at Man United.
“He is going to be the future of Manchester United. That is my feeling. So you [Mainoo] just need to wait for each chance and everything can change in football in two days. He will have the opportunity that he has all the time to force his way in,” Amorim said.
“The position of Casemiro [No 6], he can do it. He can play if we play with three in midfield. He can play like we play in the position of Mason Mount [No 10].”
Amorim admitted that Mainoo could be allowed to go on loan in January for more competitive minutes at some other club, but that would only happen if he gets a replacement.
“If we are not getting someone, it is hard to leave,” he said.
