How come nobody ever thought of doing an origin story of Sherlock Holmes? There have been multiple adaptations, endless portrayals in multiple languages. This is one detective, whose meticulousness is always enticing to watch. What drives his work is an absolute sharp sense of observation. And to see him effortlessly solve all the complex cases always makes for an entertaining watch. We now have an origin story of the most popular detective in the world. The title is absolutely appropriate- Young Sherlock. Who would not like to know how it all began? Why he became what he eventually became. And the cherry on the cake happens to be the name of Guy Ritchie calling the shots. This is a filmmaker who has redefined humor on celluloid. Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels is for the ages.
In Young Sherlock, we get to see a different kind of humor. It is not slapstick or silly, but smart and at times scintillating. The eponymous character is not only supposed to be an erudite in what he does but also someone who ought to possess exceptional oratory skills. The quips should come at a breathless pace and ditto for the performance. And Hero Fiennes Tiffin as this young detective manages to leave an impression. This is a 19-year-old at Oxford University, discovering a lot of things and people around him. And simultaneously, he also has to solve a lot of cases. It is thrilling to see him solve his first murder case. The series may not be a classic, but you cannot ignore the juiciness on display. It is inspired by Young Sherlock Holmes by Andrew Lane.
Who is Sherlock Holmes?
Sherlock Holmes is a disgraced young man – raw and unfiltered – when he finds himself wrapped up in a murder case that threatens his liberty. His first ever case unravels a globe-trotting conspiracy, culminating in an explosive showdown that changes his life forever. Unfolding in 1870s Oxford and adventuring abroad, the series will expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street’s most renowned resident.
He says he’s always been more of a thinker than a fighter. His mother asks him to stay out of trouble. Unfortunately, being a detective and being able to stay out of trouble are not mutually exclusive. This is a character who never made friends. Is it because everybody is a suspect for him? Is it because of the nature of his profession? Ritchie does not believe in the idea of a spoon feeding his audiences. Just like how his central character does, we are also supposed to connect the dots on many occasions. The Series moves at a fast space, and there are a lot of scenes that barely allow you to breathe. It is more than just the final twist.
And since it is a period setting, around 1870, you are prepared to see grandeur on display too. Young Sherlock is fun and entertaining. A whodunnit is always welcomed, if done correctly. And this series is one of them.
