In a significant digital upgrade to India’s import infrastructure, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has integrated its Food Import Clearance System (FICS) with the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) through the ICEGATE platform under the government’s SWIFT 2.0 initiative.

The integration, which has gone live on a pilot basis at four key locations — ICD Dadri (INDER6), ICD Star Track (INSTT6), ICD Albatross (INAPL6), and ICD Patparganj (INPPG6) — will allow importers to obtain FSSAI’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) directly through the SWIFT portal.

Officials said this marks a major step towards streamlining food import processes by enabling faster, more transparent, and technology-driven clearances. The system aims to reduce human interface, minimize delays, and enhance accountability in the clearance process.

“This collaborative step between FSSAI and CBIC under SWIFT 2.0 reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for smarter, faster, and safer food import clearance,” the FSSAI said in a statement.

Earlier, FSSAI’s clearance system was integrated with CBIC under SWIFT 1.0, which facilitated electronic data exchange between agencies. The new version builds on that framework, incorporating enhanced automation and real-time data sharing for improved efficiency and traceability.

The integration is expected to cut dwell time for cargo clearance and reduce the overall cost of doing business, aligning with national priorities such as ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and ‘Digital India.’

Following the successful pilot, the system will be gradually expanded to all major food import points across the country. Officials said the move will strengthen India’s food safety ecosystem while supporting trade facilitation goals under the WTO’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA).

With SWIFT 2.0, FSSAI and CBIC aim to create a seamless, transparent, and technology-driven import clearance ecosystem that balances trade efficiency with consumer safety.
