Near-zero visibility leads to bus collisions in Haryana and a multi-vehicle crash in Greater Noida, causing speed curbs and safety advisories on major expressways
A string of accidents across northern India over the past two days has once again highlighted just how dangerous driving becomes when dense winter fog sets in, with multiple pile-ups reported on key highways in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
In Haryana, chaos unfolded on Saturday morning. In Hisar, a chain collision involving two state roadways buses and several other vehicles was reported around 8 am at Dhiktana Moda on National Highway 52. It started when a Kaithal roadways bus slammed into a dumper truck. A second bus following close behind couldn’t stop in time and crashed into them, setting off a domino effect that also pulled in a car and a motorcycle. Several passengers were injured, and officials say the near-zero visibility caused by thick fog was the main trigger.
Just a short while later, another major accident was reported from Rewari. On National Highway 352, three to four buses smashed into each other amid extremely poor visibility. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals as emergency teams moved in to clear the wreckage.
Rescue operations were launched immediately at both sites, with passengers pulled out of damaged buses and ambulances ferrying the injured to hospitals. Officials said they are still verifying the total number of people hurt and assessing how serious the injuries are. Traffic on these stretches remained badly hit as police began investigations and vehicles were cleared from the road.
The fog trouble wasn’t limited to Haryana. On Friday, nearly a dozen vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway near Dadri in Greater Noida. The crash happened near Chakrasainpur village after drivers failed to spot vehicles ahead in time in the dense fog, leading to a long traffic jam. Several people, including a woman, suffered minor injuries but were treated on the spot and are out of danger.

With accidents piling up, authorities have moved to tighten safety rules. The Gautam Buddh Nagar traffic police have cut speed limits on the Yamuna Expressway, capping speeds at 75 kmph for light vehicles and 60 kmph for heavy ones. The new limits will be in place from December 15 to February 15, the period when fog is at its worst.
Speed limits have also been lowered on other busy roads. On the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway, light vehicles can go up to 75 kmph and heavy vehicles up to 50 kmph. On the Noida Elevated Road, the cap is now 50 kmph for light vehicles and 40 kmph for heavy vehicles.
Traffic police say enforcement will be strict, with fines for overspeeding. Drivers have been urged to slow down, switch on fog lights, keep a safe distance, and avoid sudden lane changes while driving in low-visibility conditions.
