Elon Musk has criticised Christopher Nolan’s casting choices for The Odyssey, claiming the director “lost his integrity” over speculation about Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy amid wider fan debate.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk ignited a fresh online controversy by criticising Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan over casting decisions for the upcoming epic The Odyssey. Musk took to his social platform X on Sunday to claim that Nolan had “lost his integrity” if Lupita Nyong’o is cast as Helen of Troy, a role steeped in centuries of literary tradition.

Casting debate around Helen of Troy

The dispute began when a user on X argued that Helen of Troy, famously described in translations of Homer’s classic as “fair skinned, blonde and the face that launched a thousand ships”, should be portrayed accordingly. Musk amplified the post with his comment, declaring that Nolan’s reputation was at stake over the choice. He commented, “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”

While Nyong’o’s involvement in The Odyssey has not been officially confirmed, speculation about her playing Helen has circulated widely, sparking a heated debate online about representation, historical accuracy and creative licence in mythological adaptations. Supporters of diverse casting have pushed back strongly, noting that

Film buzz continues amid criticism

Despite the controversy, anticipation for Nolan’s adaptation remains high. A recent TV teaser aired during the NFL AFC Championship game featured
rapper Travis Scott in a dramatic glimpse of the Trojan War, feeding fan excitement for the project. The Odyssey boasts a star-studded ensemble including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and more.

Set to release in cinemas on 17 July 2026, the epic retelling of Homer’s ancient Greek narrative follows Odysseus’s perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The chatter over casting choices has become part of the wider conversation around the film’s modern interpretation of a classic, making it one of the most talked-about projects of the year.
