Donald Trump’s comments on Rob Reiner’s murder have sparked broad backlash from politicians, celebrities and media over perceived insensitivity and politicisation.
President Donald Trump has faced sharp criticism from lawmakers, entertainers, and commentators after posting a controversial message on his social platform Truth Social about the tragic deaths of
filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in Los Angeles earlier this week.
Reiner, 78, a celebrated director known for This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride, and his wife were found dead in their Brentwood home Sunday in what authorities are investigating as a double homicide. Their son,
Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested in connection with the case and is being held on $4 million bail.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the couple “reportedly” died because of the “anger he caused others” through what he labelled
“Trump Derangement Syndrome” – a term he and his supporters use to describe intense criticism of the president. Trump also described Reiner as “tortured and struggling” and said he had “driven people CRAZY” with his opposition to him.
The remarks triggered immediate backlash from across the political spectrum. Lawmakers including Republican Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called Trump’s comments “inappropriate” and said the tragedy was not about politics. Massie said such discourse was disrespectful to a man who had just been “brutally murdered,” and Greene echoed that sentiment, emphasising that family loss should not be politicised.
Celebrities and media figures also joined the criticism. The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg condemned Trump’s reaction on air, calling it “shameful” and urging that the focus remain on the Reiner family’s grief instead of political attacks. Other commentators labelled the post “vile” and “disgusting,” arguing it was an inappropriate politicisation of a violent tragedy.
As investigations into the Reiner deaths continue, the controversy surrounding Trump’s comments is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about reactions to the incident, underscoring deep partisan divides around public discourse and leadership.
