Chad has closed its eastern border with Sudan after clashes linked to Sudan’s civil war killed five Chadian soldiers, as the conflict increasingly spills across the frontier.

Chad has closed its eastern border with Sudan after weekend clashes linked to Sudan’s civil war killed five Chadian soldiers, Reuters reported, citing sources.

Fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, ongoing since April 2023, has periodically spilled into Chadian territory, causing casualties and damage.

A Chadian official said clashes on Saturday in the border town of Tine between the RSF and militia aligned with Sudan’s government killed five soldiers and three civilians and injured 12 others. A border guard officer confirmed the soldiers’ deaths and said additional security was needed to protect civilians.

Sources said more Chadian troops were being deployed, while the government announced the border would remain closed until further notice, citing repeated incursions linked to the conflict.

Authorities said the move aims to prevent the conflict from spreading, protect citizens and refugees, and safeguard national stability and territorial integrity. Sudan’s army and the RSF did not immediately comment. Last year, a drone strike killed two Chadian soldiers, though responsibility was unclear. A regional analyst warned that Chad now appears increasingly drawn into the conflict.
