Three Indian nationals have been arrested in Canada in connection with an extortion-linked shooting in Surrey, British Columbia. Police say the accused fired at a residence and have been remanded in custody as investigations continue.
In a recent report, three Indian nationals, including a teen, have been arrested in Canada for being in connection with a shooting incident allegedly linked to extortion in Surrey, British Columbia, police said.
THe accused were identified as Harjot Singh (21), Taranveer Singh (19), and Dayajeet Singh Billing (21). All three were taken in custody in the early hours of February 1st, 2026. Their names were released on Monday after charges were formally filed.
All three have been charged with one count of discharging a firearm into a place under Section 244.2(1)(a) of Canada’s Criminal Code. They have been remanded in custody until at least February 5, pending their next court appearance. Police said the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has also been engaged as the accused are foreign nationals.
According to the Surrey Police Service (SPS), officers responded to reports of gunfire and a small fire outside a residence in the Crescent Beach neighbourhood at around 3:50 AM on January 31. At the time, police teams assigned to Project Assurance were patrolling the area in coordination with the Major Crime Section.
Authorities searched nearby locations after the three suspects were identified near 28 Avenue and 140 Street.
The SPS Major Crime Section has taken over the investigation, which remains ongoing. Police said additional charges may be laid as evidence continues to be reviewed.
Officials also noted that the incident came amid a rise in extortion-related crime in the state. Project Assurance was launched in response to this trend, alongside the Surrey Extortion Reward Fund, established in September 2025, which offers rewards of up to $250,000 for information leading to charges and convictions.
Last week, two other Indian nationals were arrested in Surrey in a separate extortion-related shooting case. A person identified as Harshdeep Singh was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present, while Hanspreet Singh was charged with occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present.
